Have no fear Pope Francis is here – an open letter to @Pontifex –

Dear Holy Father,

Welcome to the United States and welcome to our beloved city of New York. I’m writing to request permission to celebrate our wedding in the Catholic Church. My fiancee, Enrique Padilla Jr. and I were both baptised in the Catholic Church and raised in the faith. Up until a couple years ago, I would never have imagined that it would be possible for a same sex marriage to occur in the Catholic Church. But, that was before the miracle that happened when you were placed on the throne of St Peter in March of 2013.

Enrique and I were there. You see, we too were called to Rome to witness the miracle of your papacy. In fact, on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at sundown, I knelt before the throne of St Peter and proposed to my life partner of then, 19 years, and asked him to marry me. A few days later, you sat on that throne and were annointed the most powerful human being on planet earth – you became the Holy Father to all Catholics worldwide, including Enrique and me. Do not squander that power, Holy Father. Your time as Pope is limited and until you do what God has called you to do, allow the church to celebrate unconditional love and equality for all human beings, all of your other heroic work will be unfruitful.

The time for action is now, Holy Father. It’s time to “defend human life at every stage of its development.”  It’s time to allow women into the priesthood. It’s time to allow same sex marriages to be performed in the church. It’s time for unconditional love for all. Let that love flow through you now. Have no fear, Holy Father. The church will not crumble – it will blossom. It’s time for you to finish what you started when you were called to the priesthood and took your vows in 1969. It’s time.

May God bless your eternal soul.

 Sincerely,

Culver Connor Sebastian McCall

FEAR vs GREED –

The DOW was down 469 points yesterday. All that selling was motivated by an emotion that’s one of only two market movers. On Wall Street there is Greed and there is Fear. In fact, there are indexes that measure both. Check it out. Yesterday’s selloff was motivated by FEAR through and through. The Fear index reads EXTREME FEAR right now. Oh migh! What’s an investor to do?  Sell all of her shares and run for the hills?

Fear and Greed are just opposite sides of the same coin. We jump into the market when all the stocks on the screen are green. Happy Days are hear again, the skies above are clear again… That’s Greed. We’re just grabbing our piece of the pie. Prices go up further, we load the truck up with more shares. This is our ticket to Easy Street! Then, things turn around and stocks start to slide. Suddenly all the symbols are red on the screen. We hold on expecting for things to turn around. But, our stock continues to slide.  We’re down nearly 10% percent from our initial investment and yet, we still hang on. That’s still greed. Another down day, down another 5%.  We pull the trigger and hit the sell button. SELL, SELL,SELL! Get me out, no matter what the price. That’s FEAR.

Whenever there is market volatility like we have these days, one day the market is up, the next it’s down, you know that FEAR and GREED are at play. These are the times that smart investors take profits on those up days and stay on the sidelines for awhile.  Cash is king.  You’ll never go broke because you have too much cash in the bank. Watch out below! This market has further to fall. There’s gonna be a whole lot of FEAR in the air this autumn.  Can’t wait…

Man-buns and beards – leading market indicators –

Portrait of August Rodin by John Singer Sargent 1884

The Dow Transport (DJT) is often a leading market indicator of where the stock market is headed. It consists of 20 top rated railroad, airline, trucking and delivery company stocks – think FedEx, Delta, Union Pacific. When the Dow Transport goes up, stocks go up and when it tanks, well, you get the picture. Right now the Dow Transport is sinking faster than the Titanic. It’s been dropping since December 2014, and is now down over 10% just this week. That’s really all you need to know when you’re pondering whether the stock market will go lower this fall. We’re in for a rocky road come September.

Portrait of Claude Monet by Sargent 1887

But, let’s take a look at a more interesting, and more accurate leading market indicator. Take the man-bun and beard phenomena that is omni present on the streets of NYC. Just walk into a Starbucks or look around the gym floor and you’ll see hipster men sporting “epic” beards of grizzly bear proportions. Top that off with the more feminine man-bun, an attempt at growing out a shoulder length mane of hair, and basically you’ve got a cross-gendered market indicator that foretells the end of this bull market.

This revelation came to me yesterday after I strolled through the John Singer Sargent exhibit, Portraits of Friends and Artists, at The Met Museum. The show is chock full of Sargent’s best known paintings like, of course, Madame X. But, it also shows lush man-paintings like his portraits of artist friends including Rodin, Monet, Matisse, Renoir., etc. He was “hanging out” with all the boys of the impressionist movement.

Self Portrait John Singer Sargent 1886

Let’s not ponder what they were doing right now – that’s a question for another post and another, more astute, homo blog. Just note that the exhibit is chock full of gorgeous paintings of gilded age decadence, like society ladies in pretty dresses and the bearded men that financed them.

On the train, making my way home, the idea of the beard-bun as a market indicator hit me in the face. Standing next to me was a rather attractive thirtyish man with a perfectly groomed beard and a man-bun as delicious as a Mister Softer ice cream cone – make mine chocolate! He was dressed in a well tailored navy and chalk pinstriped suit, his naked ankles peaked out from his wingtips just begging to be adored, in his ears were sparkly diamond studs, on his wrist a gold Piaget watch the size of a Mack truck and dangling from his fist a brand new suit in a matte black Canali garment bag. As I took in the vision, my mind wondered back to the Met and all the lush Sargent man-boy paintings. On the small tv monitor the news of the day scrolled. The stock market ended the day down another 200 points. There it was, the idea that the market is approaching a mega melt down, like a speeding subway train, popped into my head. Then Mister Softee turned to me, smiled, exited the train and vanished into NYC’s rush hour.

I thought it was odd and a bit surreal – but, my mind often  proposes the strangest things. Is the market in for a crash? Is the economy going to tank? We’ll have to wait and see.  But. one thing is for sure, we won’t see men in beards and man-buns a year from now.  Truth.

* The Gilded Age in US history is the late 19th century, from the 1870’s to about 1900. The term was coined by writer Mark Twain in The Gilded Age – A Tale of Today (1873), which satirized an era of serious social problems masked by a thin gold gilding.

It’s not personal, it’s business –

What a day yesterday!  With the swooning of the global markets, the world was given a wake up call. The day started with a 1,000 point drop at the open and ended down 500 points from Friday’s close. That’s a 714 billion dollar loss in value. Is this the end of the blood-letting or just the start?

Whether you’re an investor or not, chances are you’ve heard about the falling stock market. But, most of the world doesn’t really understand the markets or care to learn about them. They just buy the doom and gloom headlines along with their morning coffee. “I’ll have an extra wet skinny latte with a little armageddon, thank you.”

Let this be a reminder, that the world is not coming to an end. Nothing has changed except our perception. Stock prices are perceived value anyway. How else could we justify paying over a hundred dollars for a pair of Lululemon leggings when the cost of the raw materials is under $10. Perception! Add some supply and demand into the mix and you’ve got the jist of how the stock market works.

But, let me remind you of a sage piece of advice my grandfather gave me when I was a small boy – mind your own business. It doesn’t matter what’s happening to others. Successful people never worry about what other people are doing. They stay focussed on their own goals. As the wizard said in The Wizard of Oz, “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.”

The most important thing an investor can do right now is to stay focussed and look at all the opportunities.  Everything is on sale and even better prices are coming soon.

Mind your own business. Take the next two weeks off and enjoy the end of summer. The stock market will still be there after labor day.

Remember This Day – A Divine Intervention

I was reminded of a simple truth today.  In the midst of the the crashing stock markets, the universe whispered to me, “You are the only one getting in the way of what you wish to create.” It wasn’t that I was being ungrateful for the amazing life I’ve been given. Nor was I arrogant about the fortunate state of grace that I live in.  Really, it was that I’d fallen back into a sort of spiritual amnesia.  It happens to me regularly, and I’m convinced it’s the natural state of the human being – to forget what an amazing experience this life is. I had forgotten who I am.

Then suddenly I was reminded of my divinity by a stranger.  I had no preparation for the message the stranger delivered. But, it caused me to sit up and take notice. We’re given reminders of grace all the time.  It could be a homeless person or a surly barista at the coffee shop.  It doesn’t matter what form the angel takes, the message is always the same.  “Remember who you are, a child of the univese with the wisdom of the ages at your disposal. You are the only one getting in the way of what you wish to create.  Open up. Trust.”

Remember this day. It will never happen again. Everything about today is divine.

Vogue at 25

Twenty Five years ago today Madonna released her mega hit Vogue. There was no escaping it. The song swept over the planet like a plague and secured Madonna as the God Mother of the gay rights movement. I wrote about this in Stonewall to Obama. Here is an excerpt…

I was one of the most beautiful boys in Boston – in New York I was just another average shirtless muscle boy hanging out on the pier. I’d sit in the sun and watch the endless parade of beautiful men as they glided by. I was going to have to up my game if I wanted to make it here. Time to hit the gym! Read More

Climb Every Mountain – Boston 2016

“Climb every mountain. Ford every stream. Follow every rainbow, till you find your dream.”

I’ve just registered for the San Francisco marathon in July. The SF race is a Boston qualifier. It’s also one of the hardest marathon courses in the world. In order for me to qualify for Boston, I’ll need to run SF in 3 hours and 30 minutes. The challenge is that the fastest marathon I’ve run to date is 3 hours and 50 minutes. I need to shave 20 minutes off my time. Not a big deal, right?  I only need to run 20 of the 26 miles a minute faster than I ever have – on one of the hardest courses in the world.

How will I do it?  Hills! Lot’s of hill training. Watch out Boston. I’m coming for you!

WOW – Words of Wisdom

IMG_4302-0.JPG
Never underestimate the power of a little old lady. Take Rosa Parks or Edie Windsor for example. Edie, one of my all time biggest heros, said “Wow. We won everything we asked for…” on hearing the historic DOMA ruling that changed the lives of all living gay people and all future generations. I was honored to hear Edie in front of the Stonewall on that historic day. I also marched with Edie the following Sunday in NYC’s Pride Parade. Edie is the grandmother of the gay rights movement – and Grandma know best. Read More

All That Glitters Isn’t Gold

IMG_4295.JPG

If fashion were a trusted economic barometer, the world’s leading designers would have us believing that all that glitters is gold. But, come fall, even though it will feel like everything is golden, there’s reason to be cautious of the latest prognosis from Paris Fashion Week. Sure, there’s a bit of a precious metal obsession going on in the fashion world right now. With the Paris Fall Winter shows wrapping up, now is a good time to take a deeper look at fashion’s new deity – GOLD. The fashion pack is already tweeting that gold is the new black. Read More

What is luxury?

Luxury is subjective. What feels luxurious to you may just make my skin crawl – like polyester for instance. I know there are people out there that have expensive polyester tops and dresses in their wardrobes. But, I just can’t get past the visual of sparks flying when they pull it out of their closet in the morning. Then too, fireworks on the fourth of july accompanied by a big juicy hot dog seem luxurious to others.  Read More
