Big Money Meets Big Data in a Fitness Fashion Fusion – Fitness Trends in 2015
Thinking about your New Year’s resolutions? Well, there are a few new forces influencing fitness that will change the way we workout in 2015. Here are the fitness trends that will sweep the planet this year.
Bigger is Better
Big Money will meet Big Data in 2015 – and the Big Daddy of Big Money is Apple. The Apple Watch lands on everyone’s wrist in early 2015. With the launch of wearable technology, Apple will disrupt several new markets – fashion, fitness and healthcare to name just three. Armed with more data than the CIA, we’re about to become completely obsessed with speed, strength and, of course, calories. Watch for data disruption in your workouts soon.
The second Big Money force to influence how we workout will be Wall Street Money investing in luxury fitness. You thought your boutique fitness studio was cutting edge and chic. Just wait – the new breed of fitness studios combines hotel like facilities, amenities, leading fitness trainers and state of the art technology to push your workouts into the third dimension.
Chia is the New Quinoa

I have a friend who says you know a trend is over when they start putting it in shampoo. Well, I’ve already seen gluten free shampoo. So, it won’t be long until we’re lathering up with quinoa and kale infused soaps. That can only mean one thing – those on the cutting edge are moving on.
Fitness freaks first heard of the super powers of Chia with Christopher McDougall’s book ‘Born To Run”. Along with barefoot running, the book told us about the amazing athletic prowess of the Tarahumara Indians and their secret weapon, Chia. The barefoot running craze has faded, but, Chia is just getting started. Expect to be drinking Chia in your juices, snacking on Chia protein bars and puddings and even celebrity chefs sprinkling it on gourmet salads. Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia!
Black is the New Black

Black is back in a big way. Not only are we seeing New Yorkers running around in head to toe black, there consuming black food too – think black beans, blackberries and black rice. With the charcoal trend just getting started, we expect drinks like LuliTonix Black Magic, Charcoal Lemonade to make a big splash this year. It won’t be long until you’ll be seeing black mixed drinks at the bar too.
Read more about the benefits of charcoal here.
Fight Night
Boxing is hot and getting hotter. With the release of South Paw featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, the boxing trend will sweep the planet – and it’s not just for the boys. Louis Vuitton teamed up with Karl Lagerfeld to create a boxing piece for their Monogram line. Expect the fight club trend to hit you square in the face this year.
…and you know it’s a trend when the gay boys start doing it. Check out the Velvet Glove Boxing Club.
Run For Your Life
Once we’ve all started wearing our Apple Watches, expect everyone to become obsessed with data. With that obsession, performance will become your new trophy. Everyone and everyone will be posting their athletic performances on social media. It’s only a matter of time until you find yourself at the starting line of your first marathon. But, start slowly, why not try a half marathon first. It’s much easier to crawl before you run.
If you need some guidance on how to train for your first half or whole marathon, check out my friend Bruce Van Horn’s book You Can Go The Distance.
Hacking Your Soul

As we become more connected with wearable technology it’s becoming more difficult to connect with our own souls. That’s why we’ll see an explosion of studios offering meditation classes and a rise of pseudo spiritual gurus. But, before you hand over all your money to the latest FIT God, take some time to disconnect, unwind and breathe. Meditation can be done anywhere. I like to do it on the subway at rush hour.
Sugar Shame

Anyone and everyone will go Sugar Free this year. As soon as Apple Watch tells them how many calories they’re consuming in a day, they’ll realize that sugar is the enemy. But, before we get to Sugar Free Nirvanna, we have to cross the river Sugar Shame. We’ve all expereienced the guilty feeling of eating too much sugar. But, before you even finish the sentence, “I’m giving up sug….” Your friends and colleagues will feel the Sugar Shame and proceed to tell you why sugar is necessary and how you need to lighten up on the self sacrifice. There’s an economy larger than most third world countries built on sugar. That’s why we’re convinced that going sugar free isn’t as easy as it sounds. Feel the guilt.
